"Rockets After the Fire" is a poignant painting inspired by the resilient Kniphofia on my dad's former farm, discovered just before the Covid-19 pandemic.
The "Rockets" illuminated the charred landscape after a veld fire, symbolizing hope and life after death. The black Amethyst Sunbird pollinator, like a heroic Zorro, represents the blackened landscape and the promise of new life.
This painting is a heartfelt tribute to our dear friend Danelle, a young mom who joined us on this adventure to the “Agterveld”. The Rockets symbolize her launch into eternity after her very brave battle with cancer, a powerful representation of hope, faith and love, echoing the timeless symbolism of flowers in art.
In many ways this painting was my way to process saying good bye - for now, and to inspire hope that death is not the end…It is only the beginning.
Special Thanks:
1. To my dear Dad, for the unforgettable 4x4 adventure to the “Agterveld”, for providing the reference plant and dimension sketches that inspired this artwork. Your support and enthusiasm mean the world to me.
2. To Shaun Bell, for graciously allowing me to use his stunning Amethyst Sunbird photo as reference in my botanical composition. Your contribution has added a new layer of beauty and depth to this painting.
